ANNUAL REPORT 2002
Following are some of the achievements this past year. Many have invested time, prayers and resources for which we are grateful. Your investment has produced some dividends. I am very grateful for being able to continue to serve as Executive Director of Medical Mobilizers. Let’s look forward to what we can accomplish together in 2003.
GENERAL
First, with the help of members of our board, we restructured Medical Marriage and Family Ministries into Medical Mobilizers. In addition to continuing to offer medical marriage ministries, Medical Mobilizers, as a national inter-denominational outreach is offering medical marketplace (evangelism), medical mentoring (discipleship) and medical missions (outreach) ministries and resources.
We are developing a new board. We have several local candidates which is what our Board requested. This new board should be in place by Spring, 2003. We are working in a plan to create a common board that would oversee several local ministries.
Unfortunately, our attempt to develop a ministry (Kingdom Funding) to "equip God’s people with resources for works of service" failed. This was worth the effort but did not succeed.
We worked at strengthening the outreach of Kingdom Mobilizers with a Servant Leadership Team which continues to provide oversight and accountability for Medical Mobilizers.
Served as the Treasurer for Nashville Presbytery (accomplished getting financials on QuickBooks, developed an annual budgeting process for added accountability, participated in regular Facilitating Committee and Presbytery meetings)
Have worked aggressively on finding supplemental income with no success to date. Have interacted with ten organizations in the last few months. Have sent out resumes weekly. Have found that most organizations and ministries have a hiring freeze until after January 1, 2003.
Participating in the Ministry Outreach Resource program of the Medi-Share of The Christian Care Ministry under the American Evangelistic Association (AEA). Having ongoing discussions with Medi-Share about serving a one of their field staff overseeing the needs of a "flock" of members in this part of the country. This will be combining the work of a membership rep, recruiter of more Christian organizations and members, chaplain to deal with spiritual needs and counselor.
We are enjoying worshiping and serving at Christ Community Church in Franklin (Senior Pastor is Scotty Smith). Penny and I are now involved with the Joyful Hearts Sunday School Class taught by Dr. Brevard Haynes and others. I was asked by Dr. Haynes to be involved in weekly training sessions for the key leaders / teachers teaching through the Shorter Catechisms.
Involved in the Boy Scouts pack at Christ Community Church (serving as treasurer)
Expanded our Advisory Team which now includes twelve long time friends and advisors and previous board members.
Implemented a stronger fund-raising program using Scott Morton’s book - Funding Your Ministry (Navigator’s resource) and Bill Dillon’s book - People Raising.
Mailed out eight Updates and did follow-up work with inquiries.
Worked at building a relationship a local medical resident at Vanderbilt who is serving as a rep for Christian Medical and Dental Associations. Renewed my membership with CMDA. Continuing to develop working relationships with the leaders of CMDA in nearby cities as well as Christian Medical Ministries in Birmingham.
Participated in the weekly Empty Hands Fellowship meetings for pastors and ministry leaders in Franklin, TN.
Continuing to help in the home schooling needs of our three children. Our oldest is now a freshman student commuting to O’more College of Design in Franklin.
Penny and I are active with responsibilities in the homeschool Nashville Central Christian Warriors basketball team.
Developed a new database with ACT - a new database program. Old database program is no longer supported and is outdated. Currently have about 3,000 contacts on the Medical Mobilizers database.
Took time to upgrade and learn QuickBooks Pro 2002 for our accounting work. Working on filing the IRS 990 report.
Still working to help develop the ministry of World Harvest Communications Company. Interacting regularly with Gary Brittain, a PCA elder is the founder and president. Several ministries have benefitted from our labors. We are now working with the director of a ministry based in Houston, TX called the BivocationalNetwork.org that has over 15,000 bi-vocational pastors and ministry leaders.
Continue to promote the good work of Dr. Walt Larrimore, VP of Focus on the Family.
Will be working to help promote a new monograph written by Dr. Joe McIlhaney and others with The Medical Institute in Austin, TX This valuable tool is called "Sex, Condoms and STDs: What We Now Know".
MEDICAL MARKETPLACE (Evangelism)
Making plans to host a Medical evangelism conference in 2003. Will use either Medical Evangelism Training Strategies (METS) with Campus Crusade or the Saline Solution Conference with CMDA.
Worked on a relationship with EvangeCube to use their resources in medical evangelism on mission trips.
MEDICAL MENTORING (Discipleship)
Working with The Navigators - Glen Eryie Conference Center to promote the upcoming Physicians Discipleship Conference in Feb. 2003.
Sought to implement the Spiritual and Professional Mentoring Program among doctors and students.
MEDICAL MARRIAGES (Relational and Marriage Enrichment)
Offered marriage counseling to several individuals and couples. Most of these were phone clients seeking to help them get stabilized and with resources and referrals for local counseling.
Worked on plans for more Medical Marriage Enrichment Retreats. Recruited and have plans to train a couple from Gadsden, AL to help staff our next marriage retreat.
Succeeded in arrangements to use a ministry office in Franklin prior to and after hours for counseling couples and families. This will help to offer regular coaching, counseling and discipleship sessions.
Continuing to network with a Navigator staff couple in Lansing, MI to use the Christian PREP marriage enrichment program in work with churches, couples and other Nav staff. (See their attached report). This has been a long term project that is now bearing good fruit for churches and couples as well as for training tools for more Nav couples to use in their marriage ministries. Bob Reusser reports that many marriages have been strengthened. Our investment with your financial and prayer support has been worth it.
MEDICAL MISSIONS (Outreach)
Developed a powerful partnership with African Leadership (AL) with a focus on the Living Hope Community Center (LHCC) near Cape Town, S. Africa. Specific plans are to help The LHCC address the need and development of a hospice step-down facility for AIDS patients not yet ready to return home for family care. I have attended a local AIDS conference at Vanderbilt and a Hospice conference at Baptist Hospital this year. Nashville seems to have a lot to offer with these kinds of educational conferences. It has been a joy to assist in the process of raising funds from local churches for the African Famine Relief. I think the total exceeded $100,000. Larry Warren, founder and president of African Leadership, has secured permission to teach the MAP AIDS curriculum that was written for pastors in Kenya. The goal is to teach this in the fall to approximately half of the 5,000 pastors currently in training in over 30 countries. Larry is serving as a mentor for me personally. What we pray for is for many of these pastors who will go through the MAP curriculum who will also hear reports about models of church based medical centers like LHCC which has done a great job of offering educational programs for children as well as offer evangelistically trained community health nurses and workers. Many are responding to the good news of salvation in Christ. Compassionate care is being provided to many who have very little hope of long life on earth. Medical Mobilizers is in partnership in order to help mobilize medical professionals for these new church based clinics / HIV Testing Centers throughout Africa. The exciting development is that the Church worldwide has the chance to show how much we do care for the widows, poor and needy. The Church is and can be seen as being part of the answer NOT the problem. This pandemic is destroying individuals, families and cities and the foundation for many communities. The victims are the children who are being orphaned. Pray for the 16 country staff and many others who work with African Leadership.
Exhibited Medical Mobilizers at the annual Global Health Missions Conference in Louisville, KY in November. Networked with over 80 medical mission agencies. Presented Medical Mobilizers as a resource in the area of medical missions coaching for most of these missions agencies. Apparently nothing like Medical Mobilizers has been developed in the USA. Continuing to do a lot of follow-up work with contacts.
Continuing to interact with MMA HealthServe.org in London which is providing some mentoring to help create and develop Medical Mobilizers here in the USA. HealthServe.org is over 125 years old.
Interacting with a physician with LinkingHands.org in Singapore. This is a 4 year old organization that has asked to partner with Medical Mobilizers.
Spent a few days with the leadership of Mercy Ships in Tyler, TX to learn how to best mobilize medical professionals for three Mercy hospital ships.
Hosted a meeting at our church in Nashville to promote local domestic medical missions (Faith Family Medical Clinic and Siloam Medical Center)
Developed a working relationship with Dr. Bruce Steffas to teach his new Handbook for Short-Term Medical Missions. Will be using this in many ways including some weekly phone sessions starting in January with medical professionals nationwide who wish to be better prepared spiritually and otherwise for some short-term medical mission work.
Coached Erica Montgomery to go to Jamaica for two weeks with Medical Ministry International ( . Created a new Medical Missions Fund and helped Erica raise $3,000 for this trip. Her report is attached. The team saw close to 3,000 patients. Next step is to help Erica serve as a medical missions coach with Medical Mobilizers. Part of training for coaching will deal with spiritual preparation and resources.
Have recently interacted with the staff of World Harvest Mission about assisting in the mobilization of medical professionals for various medical mission projects.
Have interacted with leaders (John Rollo, etc.) about how to assist in the mobilization of medical professionals for the Mission to the World’s (MTW’s) medical missions projects. MTW is part of the Presbyterian Church in America.
Have been asked to help mobilize several medical professionals for a mission hospital in Cameroon, West Africa.
Exhibited Medical Mobilizers at the large Baptist Medical Dental Fellowship meeting at Callaway Gardens Conference Center last spring. Have been asked to exhibit at the next BMDF meeting in Birmingham next spring.
Have had some interactions with Resource Exchange International in Colorado Springs which takes medical professionals to closed countries. One of our local retired general surgeons recently went with this organization to Vietnam.

This is a Nurse Practitioner student organization that is interested in information about global and immigrant health issues and our ability to aid in these issues.Continue to recruit Dr. and Mrs. Nathan Collier in Gadsden, AL as associate staff. Nathan is a retired ER/FP physician who wants to focus on ministry and medical missions. Doris is gifted in evangelism. Currently, they are involved in some mission trips with a professor at Bryan College in Dayton, TN.
Continue to recruit a grant writer for Medical Mobilizers. One goal is to
form a coalition of ministries to secure grants for work related to the AIDS pandemic in Africa.Seek grant funding for the work with African Leadership in Africa. Seek to help mobilize medical professionals for opportunities related to the expanding work of African Leadership, especially at the Living Hope Community Center.ica.
Hopefully, this list of some of the activities for 2002 will give you a better idea of how I spend my time as executive director. Our list of goals for 2003 should help you see that we have plans to expand our mission. There are so many opportunities. Your funds will permit us to see some of those plans implemented. There have been many hours spent on phone calls and personal conversations and addressing counseling needs. There has been too little time for planning, developing leadership and effective follow-up work. The affirmation for the need for Medical Mobilizers has been overwhelmingly positive. We are eager to see how God will use our time and talents and your investments in 2003.
By God’s Grace,
Ron Lively, M.Div., M.A.
